O SEXTO CONTINENTE - Kevin Connor

Quando vi a adaptação cinematográfica de JOHN CARTER, baseado na obra de Edgar Rice Burroughs, não consegui deixar de pensar neste filme dos anos 70. Acho que foi a primeira vez que vi dinossauros no grande ecrã e nunca me esqueci disso.

A história era mais ou menos assim. Durante a 1ª Guerra Mundial, um submarino alemão afunda um navio inglês e captura os sobreviventes. Ao desviarem-se da rota vão dar a uma ilha onde o tempo parou, na companhia perigosa de dinossauros e homens pré-históricos. Tudo acaba com um vulcão em erupção.

Sempre adorei este tipo de coisas e este filme, dentro da sua categoria de série B, é um bom exemplo do género. É verdade que os dinossauros eram mal feitos, mas à época não esperávamos efeitos especiais muito melhores e o filme era muito divertido.

Uns anos mais tarde estreou a sequela, O SÉTIMO CONTINENTE (The People That Time Forgot), que estava praticamente ao mesmo nível do original. Podem ler sobre este filme se clicarem aqui.

When I saw the movie adaptation of JOHN CARTER, based on the Edgar Rice Burroughs’ novel, I couldn’t stop thinking about this movie done in the 70s. I think it was the first time I saw dinosaurs on the big screen and I never forget it.

The story goes like this. During World War I, a German submarine sinks a British ship and captures the survivors.  For some reason I don’t remember, they are off course and find themselves on a strange island where time stood still, in the dangerous company of dinosaurs and cavemen. Everything ends with a volcano eruption. 

I always loved this kind of stuff and this B-movie production is a good example of the genre. It’s true, the dinosaurs were terribly done, but at the time we didn’t expect much better special effects and the movie was a lot of fun.

A couple of years later there was a sequel, THE PEOPLE THAT TIME FORGOT, and it was almost as good as the first one. You can read about it by clicking here.
